HandsOn Huntsville is accepting applications for its Youth Leadership Council.  The YLC works to create and lead volunteer projects for itself and the entire corps.  Applicants must be of high school age (rising freshmen included).  If you would like to apply, visit www.volunteerhsv.org to download the application or email info@volunteerhsv.org with the subject line Youth Leadership Council.  If you have questions, call 539-7797 and ask for Laura.  HandsOn Huntsville is also seeking persons for board membership - if interested call 539-7797 or visit their website.

Youth Volunteer Corps projects open for registration - for a list of projects and to sign up , visit www.volunteerhsv.org.  The Youth Volunteer Corps is made up of youths ages 11-18 from all over Madison County.  Summer projects inlcude visiting retirement homes, working in a soup kitchen, and training animals at a shelter and more.  Questions?  Email tiffany@volunteerhsv.org, or call the HandsOn Greater Huntsville at 539-7797.

The Rug & Art Bazaar in Madison Square Mall will host an Artist Series, featuring a variety of artists on the first Sunday of each month, between the hours of 2 & 4 pm.  The artist line up through July is Elaine Nelson, portrait artist; Larry Wright, watercolorist; Tyrone Pierce, acrylic, music & dance themes; and other special guest artists.  For more information, call June Middleton at (727) 709-5086.
 
Have a Heart... help The Red Cross replenish the critically low levels of whole blood.  They are seeking individuals 17 years of age and older to donate blood.  Click here for a list of blood drives in the Huntsville & Madison areas during February.


JULY

Bridges of Madison County is partnering with the Mental Health Center of Madison County and the Nova Center for Youth and Family to sponsor a poster contest to promote mental health awareness.  Posters should highlight a famous person who had suffered with mental illness or send a message that promotes mental health awareness.  Posters should be no larger than 11"x14" and be reproducible for use in promoting mental health awareness.  For more information, call Jan Neighbors at (256) 652-9709.  Prizes will be awarded.  Submission deadline is August 31.

Small Business Start-Up of the Year" applications are being accepted through July 31.  This award highlights small business owners who started a business and implemented "best practices" to improve their liklihood of success.  Applications can be found at www.wbcna.org/startup-form.php.   Winner will be announced at the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards Ceremony on September 1, 2009.

2 - The Social Security Office in Huntsville is hosting an outreach program to get more people to use the services available online.  There will be food, drinks and more to welcome all visitors!

3 - The Spirit of America Festival's 2009 SPIRIT IDOL contest with age division competitions will be held from 4 until 6pm on the Spirit of America stage at Point Mallard Park. 

4 - Join Lite 96.9 and Fox 54 at Bridge Street Towne Center for a fun-filled Independence Day Celebration followed by a Fireworks Extravaganza choreographed to music - simulcasted on Lite 96.9!  Visit www.bridgestreethuntsville.com for details.

- The Huntsville Independence Day Tea Party will begin at 7pm at the Fairgrounds off Airport Road.  There will be food, festivities and speakers, followed by fireworks.  This movement is taking America by storm - those in protest of massive deficit spending, government takeovers of the private sector, government-run health insurance, and the slaughter of our liberties will gather on this day in over 800 cities across America!

- Madison Parks & Recreation has planned a fun filled 4th of July celebration at Dublin Park (8324 Old Madison Pike) beginning at 1pm.  Free inflatables, including a kiddie corner, 70ft obstacle course,circus train & more.  At dark, the fireworks will commence.  Concessions will be available for a minimal cost.

8-11 - The 38th Annual National Taxidermists Association's Convention, Competition and Trade Show will be held at the VBC.  This is a rare opportunity to view the definition of the words "breath-taking, awe-inspiring and beautiful" when you look at these one of a kind entries.

25 - It's a "Road Trip"!  "YESTERDAYS" Event Center is taking a road trip to the historic Shoals Theatre (122 N. 31 - Hospice Family Care is hosting its 1st community golf tournament at The Links at Redstone - beginning at 8am.  This is a 4-person scramble with tickets at $60 each, and include greens fees, cart, breakfast, lunch and prizes.  Tickets can be purchased by calling Hospice Family Care at (256) 650-1212 or by visiting www.hospicefamilycare.org.  Since the event is on Redstone Arsenal, players must provide their full names to be added to the list at the gate, and payment must be received no later than July 24.

- St. Mary's Church of the Visitation Parish Center (220 Lincoln Street) is hosting a TEA in honor of individuals in the arts to celebrate the forming of the Academy of Internationally Enabled Artists, using talent and faith to overcome disAbility and is dedicated to the use of painting, singing, writing, acting, dancing to help career minded artists who are disabled.  The TEA will be held from 1:30 until 3:00pm.  Dress is business attire, and donations are accepted.
